Mary Kosut is a cultural sociologist and Associate Professor of Media, Society, and the Arts at Purchase College, where she teaches courses on  outsider art, feminist art, visual studies, media and the body. Her interdisciplinary research draws from sociology, anthropology, philosophy and art history to examine the intersections between art worlds, everyday life  and popular culture.  He most recent book, Buzz: Urban Beekeeping and the Power of the Bee, co-authored with Lisa Jean Moore (New York University Press, 2013) examines the recent trend of urban beekeeping in New York City in light of the emergence of Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), roof top farming and DIY green movements.  Buzz critically analyzes how bees traffic within cultural, economic and political systems, and interspecies relationships between insects and humans.  Her most recent work focuses on how bees have been employed as sculptors, performance artists and live site-specific installations in museums and galleries.
