Liaison Librarians from Coast to Coast

Today I participated in an online panel hosted by UW-Libraries called "Liaison Librarian Roles from Coast to Coast."  The panel brought together UW-Madison alums who are now working as subject liaisons at Stanford, Syracuse, UM-Twin Cities, and...Purchase College.

Connected via Google+ Hangouts, we video conferenced with a room full of UW-Madison librarians about how our work as liaisons differs and is alike at our respective institutions. As always, I learned so much from my fellow panelists. Some of my take-aways:

I'm featured in Springy News: Springshare's Dec. 2012 Newsletter

SpringShare featured statistics and best practices from my virtual presentation in this month's Springy News under the heading: "Tips for Advertising Your SMS Service: Roving Reference."

Talia over at SpringShare did a great summary of my main points and used some of the data I collected on the types of questions our library gets via SMS to encourage other librarians to incorporate a roving reference/ mobile reference aspect into their text reference services.

First time presenting at a virtual conference

On November 8, 2012, I participated in SpringyCamp, a virtual conference sponsored by SpringShare and featuring librarians from across the country. 

Purchase Prism Was A Success!

On September 6th, I participated with Dana Munsch, Circulation Supervisor, and Lauren Britton, Library Student Assistant, in a fabulous, fun back-to-school event called Purchase Prism.  The Library participated as part of a collaboration with Student Life, Dining Services, and ResLife that we're calling the "Respect Your Purchase."  The aim is to generate good will among students and various campus departments while encouraged respectful and

Our MyMETRO Researchers group got a shout-out on Ear to Earth, an "independent online newsroom covering the intersection of social, economic, and ecological issues" that is managed by members of Occupy Wall Street- Environmental Solidarity.  

Finished! Annotated Bibliography on Climate Change Impacts

Fellow librarians Ari Ress, Angie Ecklund, and I just finished our final paper for the MyMetro Researchers Pilot Project, an outreach endeavor lead by the Metropolitan New York Library Council.  We created an annotated bibliography about the specific impacts of climate change for members of Occupy Wall Street:

"Engaging the Student: Classroom Management and Active Learning" Panel Presentation at METRO

On March 21st, I'll be presenting as part of a panel on classroom management and pedagogy at the Metropolitan Library Council's Bibliographic Instruction Special Interest Group Meeting. The event is titled "Engaging the Student: Classroom Management and Active Learning."  My portion of the workshop, titled "Teaching When Technology Fails," will discuss strategies for teaching when technology goes awry-- and show how active learning techniques can be your best friend when technology turns out to be your enemy!

Participating in Hot Topics in Electronic Reference Panel at ALA Midwinter

On Jan. 21st, I'll be speaking at the 2012 ALA Midwinter Conference in Dallas, Texas as part of the Hot Topics in Electronic Reference Panel, sponsored by the Reference & User Services committee (RUSA MARS).  My part of the presentation will focus on Purchase College Library's Text Message Reference program and how we combined text with roving reference to create a mobile reference service that responds to physical as well as virtual needs.

Text a Librarian Comes to Purchase Library!

On March 1, 2011, Purchase Library rolled out a new text a librarian service. This reference service allows patrons to ask a question by texting a message from their phones!  Just send a text message to 914-873-1711 and a Purchase College Librarian will text you back with an answer, usually in about 10 minutes during regular service hours!

I am a Reference & Instruction Librarian at SUNY Purchase College.  An alum of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Library and Information Studies (2010), my professional library interests include virtual reference, the history of readers and reading, information literacy, and international librarianship. As a graduate of Oberlin College (2006), I am deeply committed to diversity in higher education, whether manifested in a liberal arts curriculum or a multicultural campus community.
